The fall of Omar al-Bashir
The collapse of Omar al-Bashir’s regime has plunged an already fragile region into deeper instability. In a bid to safeguard its interests and reinforce a key client state, China launches its most ambitious foreign military operation to date, flooding Sudan with waves of troops and military hardware under the guise of support. Meanwhile, France, wary of the shifting balance of power, rushes to fortify neighboring Chad, its former colony, with a comparable show of force.
Makeshift airbases, hastily constructed across unforgiving terrain, are crammed with everything from outdated Cold War-era jets to state-of-the-art fighters equipped with cutting-edge radar systems. Off the coast, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and stealthy submarines maneuver in tense silence. On land, armored divisions and mechanized infantry stand locked in a staring contest across the desert frontier.
This volatile mix — a sudden power vacuum, unprecedented military deployments, and mutual mistrust — has created the conditions for the largest conventional war sub-Saharan Africa has seen in decades. Both sides are convinced that the other is vulnerable to a swift, crushing blow. But the question remains: will such a strike lead to victory, or unleash a conflict neither side can contain?
